Holes are cut to clean the ducts properly. They are generally cut to reach the remote areas of the duct where there is a harmful build-up. Two holes are usually cut, one near the supply plenum close to the furnace/air handler. The second is made on the return duct near the filter rack/section. The access points will be sealed after the clearing task is over. You will see small one inch round grey colored cap plugs to seal the access points so that system’s performance is not compromised.
