How Often Should You Change Your AC Air Filter?

Summer is officially here, and this week we are expecting to see our temperatures increase. As such, you want to make sure that your air conditioner is ready as it can be to handle the work you’re about to put it through. If you haven’t already scheduled your annual maintenance appointment, now is the time to do so!

In the meantime, there is one maintenance task that you can do on your own: changing the air filter. Air filters, which are designed to protect the inside components of your HVAC unit, can become congested with dust, lint, dander, and other debris that not only will make your air conditioner less efficient but also negatively impact your indoor air quality.

But how often should you clean or change this air filter? The short answer is, “It depends.” Keep reading for some basic guidelines to follow on cleaning or changing your AC air filter.

Permanent Filter

If your air conditioner’s filter is permanent, then as the name implies, it doesn’t need to be swapped for a new one. However, it will need to be cleaned on a regular basis to keep it free of clogs. This should typically be done every 2 months, and is as simple as using a garden hose with low water pressure. Be sure to allow your filter to dry out completely before replacing it, to avoid the development of mold and mildew.

Panel Filter

This type of air filter is typically made of fiberglass, and is among the most inexpensive types of air filters to purchase. Due to this, they do clog up faster than other types. While this is dependent on the contaminants in your home, it’s generally recommended that you change this type of filter once a month when your system is in use.

Pleated Filter

These air filters are more powerful than their panel counterparts. Made out of woven polyester, they keep out smaller particles. Just be sure that your pleated filter isn’t too efficient as this can unintentionally restrict airflow into your home. You should be able to get by changing this filter every 3 to 6 months.
